US Freelancer Benefits

If you're a freelancer based in the United States and working through WorkGenius, here are answers to common questions about sick time, benefits eligibility, and jury duty.

Do I have sick time as a freelancer?

Yes. Sick time is accrued based on the number of hours you work through WorkGenius. Accrual rates and availability vary by state, so it’s important to review your state’s specific policies.

Where to find your sick time details:
You can view your total hours worked and request sick time directly through your WorkGenius account.  Instructions on how to view and request sick time can be found here.

Am I eligible for benefits?

Yes. Freelance contractors are eligible to enroll in benefits starting on the first of the month following 60 days of employment.  To get started with your benefits, contact hr-support@workgenius.com.

Available benefits include:

  • Medical

  • Dental

  • Vision

  • Health Savings Account (HSA)

Important timing:
You must enroll within a 30-day window after reaching your 60-day milestone. If this window passes, you’ll need a qualifying life event—such as loss of coverage, marriage, or birth of a child—to become eligible again. Otherwise, you must wait until the annual open enrollment period (July–August) to enroll.  If you experience a qualifying life event that may affect your benefits,  contact hr-support@workgenius.com as soon as possible.

Am I paid for jury duty?

Jury duty pay policies are determined at the state level. If you are summoned, you must submit formal documentation from the court confirming the dates of your service.
